  Session I:Linking Strategy to Operations:
Dr. Robert Kaplan, Baker Foundation Professor, Harvard Business School
Many organizations have achieved one-time performance breakthroughs without the use of a formal management system. Charismatic leadership and the “art” of management are powerful and frequently effective forces. Performance dependent upon the power of individual leaders, however, is generally not sustainable over the long term. Unless an organization integrates strategy into its governance processes and operational management processes, it won’t be able to sustain its success. Strategy must be linked to operations in order to realize an execution premium. Dr. Kaplan will provide insight into how to establish this linkage. He will highlight:
  1. Determining the key processes that must be performed exceptionally well to achieve customer and financial targets;
  2. Identifying the key performance indicators(KPIs) that drive process excellence and how to present KPI’s on a process dashboard for optimum effectiveness;
  3. Establishing the management meeting structure needed to monitor and manage the link between strategy and operations.

  How Tsingtao Brewery Improved Its Competitiveness during and after an intense period of Mergers & Acquisitions
Dr. Sun Mingbo, President, Tsingtao Brewery Co., Ltd.
As the most well known brewer in China, Tsingtao began its climb to fame by pursuing the strategy of "Great Famous Brand" in the late 1990's. Later, the company shifted their strategy for growth to M&A in combination with carefully targeted asset reallocation, thereby undergoing many acquisitions across China. This enabled the company to be a leading pioneer during the critical consolidation period in China’s beer industry. How did Tsingtao integrate the management of subsidiary companies after this significant period of mergers and acquisitions? And how did they create competitive advantage through the broader portfolio of newly acquired enterprises? President Sun will explain how Tsingtao Brewery built a scientific strategy management system to improve its competitiveness during this challenging and complex period in the company’s history.
